Genetic and family history evaluation important in cancer evaluation and screening

Additional genes found that are linked to cancer. A family history should be a part of any initial work-up of cancer, as well as helping primary care physicians determine cancer risk in their patients. While we used to only know a few genes that were definitively linked to increased cancer risk, there are now many different genes. We work closely with genetic profiling companies to determine which patients need genetic testing. We also have a full-time genetic counselor at Brookwood Hospital that is a great tool to help discuss what positive results mean for a patient and his or her family.
